Hello all,
As I now have a 2-DOF racing rig now, I noticed I am left out a lot od possible motion :-) I guess I could go for a 3-dof but that would mean also a rebuild of my current rig. Looking at some of the great projects I want to look at how I can build me a 6-dof sim.
But then the questions come to me like, perhaps stupid, dumb and asked many times before but I couldn't find the answers!
As it is racing it should have quite some resolution as in feeling the curbs, asphalt, gear changes etc. I guess this would mean short leavers and lower the platform, to get more response out of motors. No need for big throws in any direction.. Small, subtle, but fast movements is what I look for.
Is there any DIY build plan or shopping cart list. I got puzzled with all options.. like what VFD (never used that ?!?), what Motors, arm lengths etc. So is there a BOM (bill of material) by anyone building or has built a 6-dof platform?! So I have a package of what is needed?! (VFD,Motors, Power supply, electronics etc, etc?)
Looked at the Brazilian F1 Store race rig and that has too much motion and I guess misses the smaller things like gear changes, would love to feel the thug I have now. So I want to keep it small and agile, for 125/140kg (person + gear..) No monitor stands etc, just oculus (love to do Iracing :-))
Thanks in advance to anybody that can clearify or help me. I'd rather build me something then buying me a 3-dof platform..

You may also have a look on stevant 6dof platform in this forum as well. He has shared a wealth of information on the materials used. Perhaps you may need to do a combination of vicpopo and stevant platforms for a middle solution. The good thing is you can build it the way you like it. Thanks Thanos

First off all, thanks for the fast replies! And yes, vicpopo, exactly that, perhaps a bit lower but the idea is that..@thanos, you got me on the right track with stevant, as I am not a welder to I like what he did with the wooden bottom plane. So the combo is indeed what I am looking for. Will be reading the threads again ana again.. But is there a particular combo of motor & VHD I can search for to start planning my budget. I guess I am looking for, excluding the frame.. 6xMotor, 6xVHD, 6DOF electronics board... ( or is there more not of the diy shelf store) vicpopo, can you give me your specs/ list of materials?! As it seems to be proven?!
I will have the levers and rods made by some company, as I am not a welder or able to cut steel..
Damn... I want to get aboard.. I am itching all over .. but no room to start building for the next couple of 7 months.. But then again, this gives me plenty of time to start planning and getting the materials right.. I was thinking of getting me a 3DOF simxperience rig but after looking at Vicpop's video I am completely on the 6-Dof route.. Nice and subtler movements, exactly as I want it.. Thinking of putting an RS1 frame or any other existing frame on top would be my best option!!
Ai.. getting hyper here, that I almost forgot the biggest part, any idea on the costs ($5000, $7500,$10.000) for the essential parts?! Was I on the right track by stating that I would increase resolution on shorter levers?
Update: As I read up I see a lot of current is needed.. will a normal household outlet (220V) work or do we need some extra electrical things worked out for running a 6dof.. ?!
Again thanks!!Appreciate any direction!! Michael

Hi Michael, I had space constrains as well. I have build a few mini platforms so I can test it myself on my work bench. Perhaps you could use such a mini platform with RC servos so you can experiment with different lengths and dimensions before settling on the parts that have to be welded. See here some simple plans for one: www.dropbox.com/sh/fgst65om3fv7w32/AADuxYUoEgQLCpgaBkhRcp9ua?dl=0And some more information about these: motionsim.blogspot.com/2013/11/6dof-mini-servo-platform.htmland here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cewn7JJtKGkAbout the question on the 220v outlet at home... Yes you can use a normal outlet (with ground pin). Most european Fuse boxes are rated for 20A or 15A, but you can have an electrician install you a better wiring to your simulator that will allow for more Amps. For the simple single seat simulator you plan to make, I don't think you will need more that 10A - 12A total for all motors. And that is peak current!! Not constant load!!! When I was back in Greece I had my fuses on my electrical box turn off sometimes when I was powering on my custom made gaming computer with 1500watt power supply... I figured out that I had to use different outlet that was through a higher amps fuse... For the size of motors/wormgearboxes/VFD inverters/ you will need, we could make a list soon. For the AMC1280USB + 6dof ext boards, contact me on my email (tronickod@yahoo.com). Thanks Thanos PS, for the record, The VFD are Variable Frequency Drives, that convert the 1phase 220v input to 3phase 220v output to power and drive the AC motors... That is their power supply! PS2. The cost for the essential parts is around $4000 - $5000 ... but hey, they will last, they are industrial grade! PS3. For the fabrication of arms and sensor mounts you may want to contact jerome , I think he has some available. See here

Thanks for clearing the 220 outlet question. Guess I will have a spare fuse for it installed but that is all for later..
Would love to see a list of motors,VHD and specs.. I need some expert in these as I don't have this knowledge and you guys have the experience in what specs and what combo's should give the best result for a racing rig.
Time is not an issues, just need to wait till my son moves out of the house.. Than I have the attic for myself. But that is in about 7 months..
Thanks for sharing the jerome contact. I guess this will be of some good use.. But first is planning and budget.. the $5000 mark is what I expected .. As hard as it is I would love to start ASAP but the space constraint is a real issue.. I have my 2dof in my office, so my office is crammed.. And I would love to keep on racing instead of breaking it up. but the 6 dof footprint would be bigger than my current platform..
So thanks all so far and will contact you for the boards as soon as I really start. My problem is that as soon as I start I want it all the way!!:-)
with kind regards,
Michael

Although I haven't got the space to start my 6-dof, I am too curious and scavenge all of the internet in search for my needed budget. Can someone point me in the right direction on the motors and reducers? I have found www.aliexpress.com/store/520703 and I think it has what I need although I am not sure of what I need for a 150 to 200 kg lifting platform.. Could anybody help me? I'd rather buy them in the Netherlands but this is a needle in a haystack for me.. As I am not sure what to look for.. With kind regards and thanks in advance, Michael

Hey Mike,
I purchased all of my items here in the states, would you like to know what motors I used?, inverters, gearboxes etc? You definitely feel all the nuances you are referring too, gear shifting, braking, acceleration, deceleraton etc. As for the amount of movement you are referring too, that can all be controlled in the software. Between your percentage of movement, your P value and motor speeds, you'll be able to taylor the motion that suit your needs and likes.
Sincerely,
Steve

Would love to get a list of your sim. Yours is so nice.. Exact as I want it, so yes!!! Also would like to see details of how you connected the rods to the motors!! Well, what don't I want :-) I want it all.. I am anxious to build me up a list of items I need. So that when the room comes available I can get started.. I now have to go on with my 2-dof but I will upgrade the rig in the meantime so I can put the entire frame on the platform. So I'll start building me the right right for on the 6-dof but keep the seat in a 2-dof mode for now.. In the meantime I want to make my purchases for the 6-dof. This to spread the budget spendings :-)
With kind regards and keep on posting video's!!!! Show all the details :-) and make us jealous:-)
Michael
