UK AC powered 6dof project

Firstly a nice surprise last week when something arrived a bit sooner than i was expecting.



A lovely little board and all-round neat solution and im looking forward to delving into this once my motors arrive.

After a ton of reading i decided to over engineer a bit for what will be a fairly light build using VR as the main display ( or a temporary
monitor setup until someone cracks the motion offset issue)
I like the idea of over engineering so went with 1.1kw 1.5HP motors and 090 gearboxes which should put out more than enough torque for my build and leave
some scope for further mods in the future.
I sourced the gearbox and motors from china 1. to save cost and 2. to learn the processes for importing for my business.

Their help and communication has been excellent so far. Although the parts have now arrived in the UK
i found out last week it will be another month! to clear customs and be delivered, but its not really a problem as there are lots of
other items to push on with.
The supplier was kind enough to send photos of my units before they shipped which was a nice touch of service again.

Onto the heim joints.. big heim joints 1 1/4" with 1" bore and high misalignment spacers which reduce bore to 3/4" and increase from 17 to 30degree
of rotation.
Now this defiantly made life difficult going with this size as allot of the associated parts for working with 3/4" are not as
easy to come by in the UK but with some effort ive found most of what i need at a good price.
I couldn't find this size heim joint in the UK at all so meant either importing from US or China. So went with China supplier again
for cost reasons.I used:

so my arc welding is making progress and im about good enough to weld the upper frame without to much issue:

I started out with cheap rods which made learning more difficult than it needed to be, just switched to a better make and the difference was dramatic. so for others learning, dont skimp on that. BUT after some research i decided that welding the bungs for the heim joints was probably pushing my luck especially as i didnt order any
spares which at about 4$ each i should have done. So ive sent the rods and heims for tig welding which was surprisingly economical.

The upper frames making progress and once the final holes are drilled im about ready to weld it all together. this is 3mm mild steel box 50x25mm. and 3/4" bright mild steel rod.
i bought a 3/4" die to thread the ends which was another little thing i learned and it worked a treat.



so thats about as far as i got. Progress wont always be fast due to work commitments but hopefully i can make steady progress.

One area im still pondering on is what VFD's to go for. Id really like the Hitachi wj200's but there not readily available
in the UK which makes them an expensive option.

i noticed that there are some guides for this model in the dropbox files so these seem to be a fair option, maybe some one can confirm?
Id like to keep things as simple as possible here and avoid having to make additional relay boards etc so if there is a better
option or the Hitachi's offer a significant benefit then i may have to reconsider those.

i have been asking syz but they say they only sell misalignment in bigger batch. I got my 12 XMR16 from them as well. Well not exactly - they made a mistake sending one of it left handed thread (XML16) and actually made me pay for the shipping of the new one they sent me. Anyway, i made a custom misalignment and i screw up the measurement and it doesnt fit my XMR16. So hope you can help me out - how you manage to get the misalignment from china?

are a little tricky to setup, as they only accept Sink signals. I would prefer the Hitachi wj200 as it will be better investment, and less headache.

that is not consistence service, i did ask for all of those 12 units each. Only XMR16 and lock nuts are available, so i manage to get only those. I ended up making custom made spacers and custom threaded rods instead of bungs. But i think they are quite famous in china. I guess it depends on which salesperson you are dealing with. Actually he ask for me to pay for the item and shipping, but i hassle a bit so i only pay shipping. But still unfair to me since i have to delay my project to wait for that item. I doubt sending the XML16 back would change anything.

The sale person at SYZ said i had to order quick as they only had a few missalinement's spacers left at the time i ordered, maybe i was lucky then.

Well spotted with the break resistor issue, im having trouble following the manual to see which models have resistor and which dont, i will ring the supplier today
as i would really prefer that option even if it is an external one.

NP Clyevo, i feel your frustration! hope you overcome the problem soon.

SO another little milestone today.. motors and gear boxes arrived earlier than expected from china.
1.1kw with 090 gear and 60:1 ratio and dual shaft. Pretty big and pretty heavy

Also i collected my rod arms from the welder who done a lovely job with TIG welding the bungs.

Still yet to order VFD's, after further research the E2 Invertek model was not suitable, i needed the P2 model (like fabi) which
was even more expensive than the Hitachi's... So looks like WJ200-015SF's it is.

A new Slight annoyance today is that i spent £500 having 6mm SWA cable run to garage which was to power welder and the Motion Sim.
Now ive realized this will not take enough amps to power all 6 VFD's!! argh. So i will have to pay for another cable run and fuse box and
put 3 motors on each. I think each 6mm cable will be good for about 45-50 amps and each 015SF is about 18amps at 100% load. the motors are 1.1kw not 1.5 and
will not be running at full speed and not all at 100% at the same time so im hoping 6mm will be ok.. or ill have to rip out 6mm i just paid for and run two 10mm cables.
The costs are mounting !

I don't think you will need more than 25-30amps. The max current is for when the motor is in stall!! But the gearboxes will hold the load, and the motor will only need power while it has to move to new position. Plus the load will be shared between all motors for the worst case of vertical movement (Heave) straight up.

My friend here in San Diego, was running his platform directly for a washer/dryer power outlet in his garage that I don't think was rated more than 25A.
