Hello,
I have a question about controllers and AMC1280 controller.
I have a system which consists of motion cueing, kinematic equations, servo drivers and servos.
1) Should I use a controller ? If yes or no, why ?
2) If I should use controller, what are benefits of controller ?
3) Can I use system without any conttroller or etc. ?
Thanks.

Hi, If you already have a complete system, which from the description you gave sounds expensive already, then no, you probably don't need a controller. ( question 1) Question 2: The benefit of the controller is that it will be much more reliable to do real time position control of motors than a computer would. Also take in consideration that most of the motors used in DIY motion simulation applications are not complete servodrives, but simple VFD inverters (speed controllers) that does not have actually position control capabilities. That is where the AMC1280USB motion controller comes into the picture to fill that gap. You can convert to servomotor any kind of motor no matter how small or big, or what kind of drive it uses. Question 3: No, even comercial 6DOF platform that use expensive servomotors, and RS485 modbus protocol, the have onboard a microcontroller that reads motion data from the computer to interpret it to RS485 modbus signals for the servodrives. So no, I don't think its a good idea not to have motion controller. Question 4 (you failed to ask but here it goes) One important thing to consider is how easy is for a motion platform to be compatible with all motion cue software around (free or not). Does your motion cue software needs complex programming for interfacing to each game? The AMC1280USB is supported by the 3 major motion software available for the DIY community (and not only). Some of this software supports simulation better than the other one, or have support for some that others don't. --> bffsimulation.com/6DOF-Motion-Software.php--> www.x-sim.de/forum/portal.php--> www.xsimulator.net/See the FAQ about AMC1280USB for more information: motionsim.freeforums.net/thread/4/Thanks Thanos
