After seeing this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CMIPu3t7d0 linked to me by Thanos I went looking and I think I found these servos: www.teknic.com/products/clearpath-brushless-dc-servo-motors/These look really good, what model would I need to buy and what other parts would I need to make them work? Servo Motors (3) Power supply for (3) motors Thanos AMC1280USB (3?) Is this all or do I need other electronics? I am also considering AC gearmotors for lower cost and will post in that section as well but so far I feel much more overwhelmed trying to learn about what parts to buy and how to use AC gearmotors. Thanks!

Hi, You will need only one AMC1280USB (set it to 3DOF mode): www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEdJDHd_pv03x Clearpath servo motors model MCVC ... You may contact Teknic and they will advice you what size you will need, but usually a 1.2HP will be enough. 1x Power supply for all motors: SST-EMF75 ( www.teknic.com/products/servo-motor-dc-power-supply/pricing-specs-dc-power-supplies/ ) You will need some Gearbox as well, perhaps one that fits in NEMA34 mount, with final output 100-200 RPM. You can adjust the exact max RPM later from the Motor setup GUI. If you go the Servomotor way, you will see that it has certain advantages compared to AC motors. www.teknic.com/watch-video/It was until recently that servomotors were really expensive and hard to drive. Not anymore. Thanks Thanos

Thanks Thanos, this is most of the info I need!
Where do I shop for such a gearbox? I looked on ebay for NEMA34 mount gear boxes and the results I saw were very expensive.

Over on X-sim you said to me that these servomotors could be used directly with no gearbox for projects like Ian's linear actuators. Which model ClearPath motor were you talking about/which would you recommend for using like this? I see there are three different MCVC servomotors at that price.
I am ok with going to $388 per motor for three motors plus the power supply if it's a good solution (without gearboxes) for building Ian's projects.
This would make my shopping list: 3x MCVC servo motors @ $388.00 each ($1164) plus shipping 1x SST-EMF75 power supply 1x Thanos AMC1280USB
To build Ian's linear actuators for 3DOF would I need anything else besides the parts in the plans? If this is all I need I will get the parts ordered =)
Thanks again for all of your time and help!
Trip

You can use this model with Ian's linear actuators: www.teknic.com/model-info/CPM-MCVC-3441S-RLN/With the bungee cord to hold most of the weight, It will give enough torque for the application without need for gearbox. You can reduce the max RPM to 400 to match the motors RPM that Ian used. Thanos

Besides the motors, PSU, and 1x Thanos AMC1280USB do I need anything else to run these on X-sim? Some kind of Arduino maybe? If so one for each motor or just one?
Thanks

You only need the main board of AMC1280USB. It has connections to hook up to 6 motors if you wish, in PWM mode. You connect the signal cables from the motors directly on the AMC1280USB, no need for other converters or adapters.
You can see in the video, no other electronics required. I'll make a video later to show how to set the correct PWM frequency for the clearpath motors as they need some special range of PWM. Over or under that range, the motor thinks there is no signal and disables itself (which is good safety measure in case something came loose...)

Thanos, I need a sprocket for the servo motors. I know it's a half inch shaft on these but is there a flat or something? What kind of attachment would be used for a motorcycle chain type gear?

Thank you, those look good. I've contacted a manufacturer about sprockets, waiting for a reply from them but I think I'll have a workable solution for a reasonable price.
